Athassel is the largest medieval priory in Ireland, stretching over four 4 acres of land along the banks of the beautiful River Suir in the village of Golden.

Built for the Augustinians by William de Burgho in the 12th Century, the abbey burned down in 1447 and the monastery was dissolved in the 1500s, after which the buildings subsequently fell into ruin. The nave of the Abbey is used as a cemetery, and among the many people laid to rest in the chapel was William de Burgho, the man who established Athassel more than 800 years ago.
