Marlfield

Located along the Suir Blueway, just three kilometres west of Clonmel, Marlfield village has a long and fascinating history resulting in some interesting sites worth exploring to this day.

Enjoy the beauty and serenity of St Patrick’s Well, which has been a place of worship for thousands of years. A stone cross at the site dates back to the 5th century, while the 15th century church was attached to the lost Abbey of Inishlounaght. The abbey stood close to the site of present-day St Patrick’s Church, built in 1818.

Marlfield lake, a man-made lake which powered the local mills, is now a wildlife sanctuary and home to a large population of water birds. At one time the lake also provided power to Marlfield House, home to the influential Bagwell family. The Palladian-style country house has now been converted into private residences but you can’t miss the impressive main entrance in the village. Nearby Marlfield Forest once formed part of the estate and offers two looped trails to explore.
