Walking and hiking in Tipperary takes discovering to a new level. Hop on a guided walking tour with the Siul Eile group and explore the landscape through time.

The Siul Eile Group has been guiding local communities in Tipperary on thousands of walks in their locality. The group are delighted to introduce the Conquer The Castles quest. A 6-week series based around some of the many fabulous castles that once upon a time dominated the land.

With a mix of walking and talking experience, they will reveal the ancient stories and lore of hidden Tipperary. The experienced local guides will bring you back through the centuries explaining the forgotten history on off the beaten tracks and trails and delving into the myths and legends of the locality!!

Burncourt Castle (10th July)

We kick off our Conquer The Castles series with a visit to the welcoming village of Burncourt in the Galty Vee Valley.

With the Galtee mountains in the background and the Knockmealdowns opposite them, we start off this scenic walk in the village before making our way to the enormous Burncourt Castle built in 1641.

Step back in time and learn all the complex history of the area led by extremely knowledgeable local and entertaining guides.

The Galtee Castle guided tour starts and finishes at Galty Castle Woods, 400 metres from where the once proud building stood, sadly the building no longer exists as it was demolished and salvaged.

Situated on the southern slopes of the Galtee mountains, this woodland walk with magnificent views of the mountains will bring you back through the centuries as your local knowledgeable qualified guide explains how the local inhabitants survived in harsh conditions in this extremely remote area, bringing you off the beaten track into an unspoilt landscape that would lift any spirit.

Golden Castle is over 700 years old and shows all the signs of it!!

Built on an island in the charming village of Golden overlooking the picturesque river Suir.

This area is steeped in history, learn all about it while you follow your local knowledgeable guide for a wander along the river Suir to Athassel Abbey, the largest medieval priory in Ireland, be amazed at the sculpture of the building which is standing the test of time for over 800 years.

Shanbally Castle (14th August)

Shanbally Castle and its surroundings are a treasure trove of hidden gems.

The magnificent castle itself was built in the early 1800s by the renowned architect John Nash and proclaimed to be the finest house in Ireland until it was blown up by the Irish Government!!

An experienced local guide will lead you through the ancient woods to the man made lake with water lilies in bloom, there will also be a pit stop at an old Tea House overlooking the lake.

Steeped in history the magical Shanbally estate has umpteen stories to be told.
