A walking weekend in Tipperary is an ideal way to experience the county’s rich heritage, scenic countryside and welcoming towns, with the historic town of Cahir providing a perfect base. Set beneath the Galtee Mountains and overlooked by the impressive Cahir Castle, the area offers a relaxed yet rewarding walking environment. From here, walkers can enjoy sections of St Declan’s Way, one of Ireland’s oldest pilgrim routes, winding through quiet farmland and past early Christian sites, offering a gentle introduction to the landscapes and history of Tipperary.
For those seeking more variety and challenge during a walking weekend in Tipperary, the surrounding mountains deliver unforgettable experiences. The ascent of Galtymore, the highest peak in the Galtees, rewards walkers with expansive views across Munster, while the iconic Slievenamon provides a broad summit plateau steeped in myth and folklore. Together, these walks combine lowland trails and classic mountain routes, making Tipperary a superb choice for a short walking break filled with natural beauty, history and a real sense of place.
Cahir Town and Hotel: Staying in the lovely heritage town of Cahir, close to the trail head, and a real gem. Dominated by Cahir Castle on the banks of the river Suir, Cahir was a stronghold of the Butler family and the hotel accommodation was a former Butler Manor house. This is an old-style country hotel and the visitor books has signatures from De Valera, Mae West, Walt Disney and Douglas Fairbanks to name but a few. We chose this luxury three-star hotel because of its location – right in the heart of a gorgeous town and next to one of the most spectacular Anglo-Norman Castles in Ireland.
