Holycross Abbey

Holycross Abbey, a restored medieval Cistercian monastery on the banks of the River Suir, was founded by Dónal Mór Ó Briain, King of Limerick, in 1182 AD. It houses the relic of the True Cross, drawing pilgrims since its inception. The Butlers of Ormond carried out major renovations around 1400 AD, including the enshrinement of the Ormond Relic. Many unique architectural features date back to the 15th century rebuild.
