The townland of Portland, Co. Tipperary is located at the northernmost point of Lough Derg, bordering Galway. It’s here that the River Shannon flows into Lough Derg, forming a natural boundary between the counties, which are connected by Portumna Bridge. Portland harbour, connected to the Shannon by a small channel, was built around 1810 and originally served a wharf and saw mills. Nearby Portland House was built c.1820 as a country house and the grounds contain a ha-ha, walled garden and gate house.
