Curreeny Heritage Hedge School
This historic site is located 365 metres above sea level in Curreeny, North Tipperary, 18km from Nenagh. The Memorial encapsulates the raison d'etre of the Hedge School. Sit on the Sedes Sapientiae and reflect on the trials, courage, sacrafices, faith, determination and victory of our ancestors. Then leave invigorated for the challenges of life.

This memorial site was where students and teachers met during the times of the Penal Laws, when the protestant government forbade any catholic or papal traditions or education to be spread.  Hedge schools were very risky to operate, with the punishments ranging from hefty fines, imprisonment, or even death by hanging. However, the hedge school teachers and parents braved the odds and made many sacrifices to ensure that their pupils and children were educated in not only reading, writing, and arithmetic, but also some Latin, Greek, and traditional Irish culture.
